I spent this morning in Oxford, as I needed a haircut before my teaching starts on Monday. I actually meet my students tomorrow evening, or some of them. I'm teaching a retired couple - husband a nuclear engineer, wife a retired US state education department official - and two unknown quantities.

I made an expedition to Botley Road, to find it nervously open, with far fewer cars than one would normally expect at 10.30 on a Saturday morning. The only road to be closed was Ferry Hinksey Road, and that was dry until it met Oatlands Road Recreation Ground, which still looks more fit for a boating lake than anything else. There was little sign of unanted water elsewhere, apart from a large amount of standing water on Binsey Lane. Osney Island was no longer overrun, and the river, though high, was within its banks. A team from the Environment Agency were patrolling but they drove off about 11am, with a cratefull of bread rolls from one of the shops.
