The Daily Telegraph's nascent internet TV service (much mocked in some quarters for its amateurishness, but arguably simply conservative in its presentational style and mindful of a tight budget) has a piece on the return of Doctor Who by Charles Spencer. I've long suspected him of fan tendencies; back in 1987 he remarked that the Doctor should have been like the surgeons in the medical documentary running the same evening on BBC 2, and been 'steeped in blood', but that Delta and the Bannermen was timid adventuring compared to the death-soaked episodes of the mid-1980s. By Dragonfire he admitted he was 'warming to the idea' of the programme as 'an interstellar variety show'. (All the quotes are IIRC.)
