I first watched 42 in the early hours of Sunday morning, while concentrating on an emotionally cathartic piece of prose. Watched in the corner of a PC monitor, it came across as at times the most compelling episode of the series so far - almost because there were a few moments where I suddenly lost interest, such as during the Doctor's rescue of Martha and Riley.
Viewing the episode again, on the BBC 3 repeat at 8pm this evening, there was less to see that could involve me so much for the second time. The standout features remained the use of possession, particularly the possession of the Doctor, which was infrequent in the original series (I can only think of The Invisible Enemy). I liked the corridor-based sets, and not just through old-series nostalgia; I thought of the ship as a warren of passageways and this gave the vessel a feeling of size and confinement at the same time.
(More, perhaps, on Monday.)
