I ended up spending much more time, and much more money, than I had intended in town today. I failed to find a converter so I can run my toothbrush and shaver from the three-pin sockets (memo to self: phone electrician in the morning and get him to repair/replace the bathroom socket) but on passing an optician's, decided it was now or never (the last time having been nearly four years ago) and so will be picking up tomorrow a new pair of spectacles. The optician said that my eyes might be being strained because the spectacles I have are too strong for reading; however, replacing them with a pair that leads to my distance vision being worse than it is now wouldn't be good for the six hour drives to my parents' and back that I make several times a year. So, the stronger pair it is. My prescription prevents me from getting the half-rimmed frames that I wanted but the new frames should be fine. They look a lot lighter, I think, than the old ones, which were becoming tatty. My old lenses are becoming discoloured as their coating comes off, and I'd rather go to the book launch I'm attending on Tuesday without the distraction of purple swirls in front of my eyes.
