I think that there are lots of possible 'right answers' here. What was it Matthew Graham said about Sam being the victim of a 'cosmic joke'? There remains room for the supernatural in the conclusion, and enough evidence that 1973 and 2006 are equally real, as if Sam's identity has become chronologically confused with the Sam Tyler invented by Frank Morgan for Sam Williams to adopt in the MARS project. Ultimately, Sam is given the choice of reality to experience, and chooses 1973.
