I've already expressed my condolences to [livejournal.com profile] narahttbbs on the fall of Margaret Beckett from the Cabinet. It seems that the first woman foreign secretary can't hold office alongside the first woman home secretary.

Something that no-one seems to have spotted: Jack Straw becomes the first lord chancellor (and the Justice Department and No. 10 have confirmed that he will hold that office alongside that of justice secretary) to sit in the House of Commons since Sir Thomas More in the sixteenth century.

Correction 23:42:More had been an MP, but wasn't in the Commons when he was lord chancellor; he seems to have sat, ex officio, on the Woolsack in the Lords, without actually being made a peer.
