The good news is that it was the immersion heater that had blown. The problem is that in removing the thirty-year-old and badly corroded coil, hairline fractures happened to the similarly aged and decrepid cylinder. The plumber is attempting some temporary repairs now, but it looks like a new cylinder - or possibly a new kind of water heater entirely - is in the offing.
Oh, the joys of home ownership. :)
UPDATE 18:06 : The temporary repair is holding - I'm told that it could last hours or years. I'm going to get a quote for a new heater anyway.
