[livejournal.com profile] narahttbbs joked I was well cast as Hurin in tonight's SocT dramatic reading, on the grounds that I was old, large and tortured. Well, I think she was joking. The JRRT text was 'The Wanderings of Hurin', capably abridged by Oin.

The intention was that the performance would be video-recorded outdoors by DrG, but all his batteries had failed so we fell back on photography and short moving sequences captured by digital cameras. At one stage I was lifted up and carried across a short stretch of the Pococke Carden at ChCh by DrG, Sherlock, RF and [livejournal.com profile] osymandias - I think I'm right but I was concentrating on being as light as possible at the time.

Good fun, anyway, and it was a pity that I had to leave to catch the last bus as we had retired to the Bayne room, fortified by coffee or tea from ChCh SCR kindly provided by DrG, to put the university to rights - defending pluralism against the uniformity and centralization seemingly sought by the vice-chancellor, though FifthAnna bravely put a few arguments for central planning of courses, and we all seemed to agree that libraries could be better run and catalogued.
