I've just come back from a chat with a historian who has responded positively to my solicitations, and I should be doing some casual research work for her project (on an even grander scale than TGW, in some respects, but I'll just call it The Other Great Work for now) once she's sorted some out for me. There might also be expenses-paid travel to archives in other parts of the country. The pay isn't as great as I'd hoped - the hourly rate is a few pounds below what I'd ordinarily charge for freelance research work - but it will be irregular regular work, if you see what I mean, and is therefore welcome.
